Reel America: "Alaska Highway" - 1944. The U.S. Army Signal Corps documented the difficult task of building a 1,500 mile highway through the Canadian wilderness as a World War II supply route from the lower 48 states to Fairbanks, Alaska. The highway connected several airfields and isolated ports on the Alaska panhandle. It was opened to the public in 1948.
