It's obscure stuff only if your knowledge of cinema is limited to MCU. Most movie buffs have seen or know about most of the movies ken watches, they're literally almost all classics, cult or fashionable movies. Even the more experimental stuff is fairly well known, like Hollis Frampton, whose works are considered milestones of avant-garde cinema.
