marathon xc is really hard there's no hiding unlike in road and gravel and its always full gas from the start from what I've seen. And its not done after 60-90 min 
One guy in my club races that and the watts are crazy and he's not even winning shit either. I'm planning on getting into that as well (maybe) since road is not for me
