"Galileo's punishment
for supporting heliocentrism (Sun-centered solar system) was a trial by the Inquisition in 1633, resulting in a sentence of life imprisonment, which was immediately commuted to house arrest for the rest of his life, banned books, and required recitation of penitential psalms. Though threatened with torture, he was not physically harmed but endured significant psychological stress, living under house arrest in his villa near Florence until his death in 1642, while continuing his scientific work."
