Many books (and "book-like" technology such papyrus) have been destroyed through human history, sometimes entire libraries such as the Library of Alexandria.
Maybe they have stored some valuable info in all of that. Also and probably, some of it was not that important as things were rediscovered eventually.

We try to keep at least our important/core knowledge.
