I wouldn't recommend "traditional" American food because most of that came about post-industrial revolution, so it's based off brand name canned things. You're better off eating what people around here enjoy eating.
America is too big to have a uniform national cuisine. As I said, you have to go by the region. I named a bunch of unique regional foods, so I'm not really sure what you're on about. If you specifically tell me where you're visiting, and I've been there, I can help.
