Also while not as big as Nintendo, Bamco is still a huge publisher and dev in their own right, so wouldn't surprise me if they were less willing to let Nintendo have full creative control if they thought what Nintendo was telling them to do would make the game flop. Retro probably can't really talk back to Nintendo at all. 
Considering the product that came out, the Bamco version not having all of the shitty trends Nintendo wanted it to seems like a pretty likely reason it was cancelled.
