Time to catch up.
Today may be the seventh of December, but due to circumstances, we will see what the fifth of December brought on the table.
The beer of the fifth of December, is a weissbeer, from the Estonian brewery Põhjala called Taevas.
The ale pours bright yellow, looking very fizzy and leaves a pretty white foamy head. The smell gives notes of wheat malt and fruits like citra, oranges and banana.
Weissbeer has a pretty different mouth-feel from other types of beer styles. Where some may have a body that's well-rounded flavour or one that's light and crisp, weiss tends to be fruity, smooth and often with an aftertaste of bananas.
This one is no exception. The mouthfeel is quite ordinary, tasting plenty like wheat with the citra nipping at your tongue and leaves an aftertaste of banana mixed with spirit. The ale could do with more body, as the whole experience feels somewhat watery.
For a weiss-beer, 5.2% is also on the more heavier side, which should allow it a more full and well-rounded body, but it just doesn't. So even if you wish for something light and refreshing, this doesn't strike the right cords.
A shame.
Merry Christmas
