This is the main reason. Australia by itself doesn't need nuclear subs at all, there are no economic nor military reasons to have nuclear subs for that specific country.
Main reason for this event is ability for US to use Australian bases for own subs easily. New "Australian" subs would be also basically US-controlled and count as "own". UK is sometimes called a "largest American aircraft carrier", so Australia is another one, just in other region.
And of course second reason is spending money for military complex.
