If you start in a town, you can ransack the nearest grocery store and nearby houses and have enough non-perishable food to last MONTHS. In my RV, I've got the means to be self-reliant permanently. You only ever die because you get too cocky and scavenge more than you need to. It's greed. Greed kills.
