CDDA, or CBN I guess in that case is definitely not easier than Zomboid. Well, it might be easier only in the way that you will not die of boredom playing it.

No idea about the fork, but my friends that like roguelikes put in a bunch of hours into CDDA and both of them say it's pretty good.
I don't think I could get into spend 30 hours to learn control scheme kind of games.
