they where big in the late 90s easy to tune parts are getting a little harder to get now but you dont need a gti. i lie when i call mine a gti but its easy to get people to understand.
what you will need is a 1.5 out of a sedan swift with throttle body injection they are physically same size as the 1.3 and the supercharger off a 4agze out of the late 80s mr2. make some brackets for the supercharger (you are going to loose a/c but its a SUPERCHARGER!!!!
wheels i was using some 16X7 light weight wheels.
Suspension wise whiteline in aus made all the bits you could ever want but my setup was 2" lower progressive springs front and back, lover control arm brace(front). strut tower braces front and back, now the swift never had a rear sway bar so whitleine did a kit so i got a 22mm rear swaybar with solid urethane mounts. front is a 24mm and you will need to replace the factory mounts. camber adjusting bolts for the front. koni adjustable shocks front and back( you could go coil overs but too much money). front brakes are same as gti so drilled and slotted rotars is all you need and some good break pads. at the back replace the drums with the solid disks off a gti and good brake pads.
So you may be asking why not put 4 piston callpers and shit on it, well 2 reasons unsprung weight and the care weighs nothing. this should be enough to scare the shit out of yourself, you will find the car now has heaps of under steer which is cool in a front wheel drive as it is sooo easy to correct for.
So sad when i sold that car had it for 8 years i cried alittle. then the stupid bitch i sold it to pained it orange and put a shitty body kit on it the dream dies.
anyhow now have a 66 vc val and im in love all over again. i will try and find some pics of it later
