yea, things were getting really bad. We've complained enough to the free host, that they've upgraded our server (however that came with 32 hours unexpected unscheduled downtime). They said if we were a paying customer we would have like 6 month credit due to all the problems we've had with them. So they've really been awesome about the whole thing.

I think the 500 are when the disks were too busy to process everything and nodes communication to nginx would time out.
