The psychic powers they're using are kabbalistic. Abra and Kadabra's names, "Abracadabra" come from a Basilidean Gnostic saying supposedly used to heal, coming from an Aramaic word for a demon.

What's even more spooky is that Kadabra's name in Japanese (Yungerer) is a corruption of "Uri Geller", who was a jewish magician. He even responded to Pokemon using his name. The other two are named after magicians as well, but neither of them jewish.
Alakazam meanwhile although doesn't seem to have any origin (or it was erased), is even more jewish. In the original Red and Green, Alakazam has a Hexagram/Seal of Solomon on his forehead. Mega Alakazam's head is a hexagram.
