Because present school system forces you to memorize sentences without comprehending what you actually say and you can make child believe in aynthing if you try hard enough
Its something simmilar like was in case of Patton when he was forced by eisenhower to go to buchenwalds part of camp to see "attrocities" which actually were just typhus corpses and Sykewars tricks like keeping bodies outside to rot even after liberation etc
Or in case of that polish officer who broke into auschwitz and "confirmed the mistreatement of prisoners" while getting out of there legally and second he gained more weight when leaving and laws of physics and math ruining whole story
