U.S. citizen Judith Raanan, released from captivity by Hamas, and relatives of Itai Glisco and Dr. Daniel Levy, who died on October 7, 2023, filed a lawsuit in Manhattan Federal Court against the crypto exchange Binance, saying that it became a platform for financing the terrorist group.
According to the lawsuit, between 2017 and 2023, Binance provided Hamas with a secret funding channel hidden from U.S. regulators. The company was aware that certain accounts were being used by Hamas and Islamic Jihad.
For several years, Binance has willingly turned a blind eye to the use of the platform by illegal players, including terrorists. They also claim that Hamas and other terrorist groups were in fact granted VIP status.
The main sponsor of the group in the lawsuit called Iran. It also highlights Syria’s role as one of the cradles of Hamas. Many others are expected to follow suit.
On October 10, the cyber unit of the Lahav 433 police department, in cooperation with the National Anti-Terrorism Economic Staff of the Ministry of Defense, the General Security Service (SHABAK) and other services, blocked cryptocurrency accounts that the Hamas terrorist organization used to collect donations on social networks.
Hamas terrorists acted through “charitable” organizations, collecting cryptocurrency through social networks allegedly for humanitarian purposes – to help the civilian population of Gaza, for medical care, etc.
Hamas-linked accounts in the Binance blockchain system were blocked, as well as accounts in the British bank Barclay's, whose details were published by Hamas for the purpose of receiving donations (this operation was carried out jointly with British police).
