In February 2023, in the Indonesian province of West Papua, people calling themselves West Papua National Liberation Army took hostage the pilot of a local airline, New Zealand citizen Philip Mertens.

What did they want? The rebel group has previously said it would release him only in exchange for recognition from independence.

For more than a year, Philip sat in the jungle and was eventually released.
