The Iranian-backed Houthis said they damaged three U.S. Navy destroyers on Friday in a strike with 23 ballistic missiles and drones.
A Houthi military spokesman said in a televised speech that the ships were targeted as they passed through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait in the Red Sea.
"We did see a massive attack from the Houthis, from cruise missiles to drones," said Sabrina Singh, a deputy spokeswoman for the U.S. Department of Defense.
"They were either shot down and shot down or failed," Singh said, referring to Houthi missiles and drones.
She said no U.S. warships were injured and no U.S. service members were injured.
