Kostylev was involved in an accident on October 27, while riding an ATV in the village of Rouhan in the Smolensk region. The journalist was standing, ran over a pile of gravel and flew off the quad bike, after which the car drove over it. He was diagnosed with a fracture of the base of the skull, a bruise of the brain, open traumatic brain injury, blunt abdominal trauma and a closed fracture of the pelvic bones. After the accident, the chief editor of Ridovka was taken to Moscow.
