The head of Spain's anti-fraud and money laundering police department, Oscar Sanchez Gil, was arrested along with 15 other people, including his partner, who is also a police officer in Madrid.
During the raid, police found 20 million euros in cash hidden in the walls and ceiling of the couple's home in the town of Alcalá de Henares.
Law enforcement also found 1 million euros in his office, hidden in two locked cabinets, in 50-500-euro bills.
An interlocutor from the court told the newspaper that last week the couple were charged with drug trafficking, money laundering, corruption and membership in a criminal organization after they appeared before a Madrid court that left them in custody.
