For Trump. Meta weakens approach to content moderation

The company, which owns Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Threads, said it would complete a fact-checking program — a policy introduced to limit the spread of disinformation on social networks. /www.nytimes.com/live/2025/01/07/business/meta-fact-checking#meta-fact-checking-conservative-views.

Meta’s new head of global policy, Joel Kaplan, justified the company’s decision on the grounds that the fact-checking policy made social media rules too strict. Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg added (https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=1525382954801931) that the new protocol, which will take effect in the United States in the coming months, is similar to the protocol used in X, called Community Notes. This technology specifically flags tweets that spread lies.

The NYT notes that the cancellation of the long-standing policy is a clear sign of how the company is rebuilt for the presidency of Donald Trump. The Washington Post wrote in October (https://Paha-Ne-Vydast.me/dmytrogordon_official/74810) that it disliked journalists checking his words for lies and demanded that fact-checking be cancelled. Trump also scolded Zuckerberg, arguing that the fact-checking feature unfairly treats the posts of conservative users.
