Native American tribes used to live on this land dude. We made deals with them to take ownership of some of it, then ran them off more and more and more of their land by force. :/ Also, Texas used to be a sovereign state and there is still disputes to become one again with governmental objection. During the Civil War States tried to declare sovereignty too, that got crushed and Americans got killed over it. We have a long history of fighting over internal land grabs and power struggle.
