Philosophy is obviously interesting because it's related to important truths or ideas. How does one participate in the human activity that is philosophy? (1) One can understand it. (2) A philosopher can create his own philosophical work, and if his efforts of thought are good then they will be different than what was done before and possibly even landmarks in the history of philosophy. I probably am not a philosopher, but it is still worthwhile to understand philosophy, so (1) it is.

So how does one come to understand philosophy? Do you "fall for the 'start with the Greeks' meme"? Do you read the source material directly? Such as reading Immanuel Kant, Hegel, etc.? It seems to be easy to read Arthur Schopenhauer directly: what I did in the past. However, some philosophers, maybe Martin Heidegger included, are harder to read. So is there any harm in like reading summaries of them? I guess not. If they have ideas or knowledge you should know, why needlessly gatekeep yourself and limit access due to some notion of not philosophizing "the right way"?
