Leslie Groves originally intended to test the first atomic bomb in California, but this would require a (purely formal) signature from George Smith Patton and General Groves refused to ask Patton because Patton was "the most unpleasant man I ever met."

Paton was the richest officer in the US Army and believed himself a warrior incarnated to battle the same  ancient, non human entity enemy.
