There is much truth in what you state.
However, academic psychology research is based on an essentially materialist view of the word--one in which there is no higher power that transcends the physical/psychological realm.
As a result, it ALWAYS over-emphasizes the power of the mind and underemphasizes the power of intention/free will, especially when used to trump the effects of psychological conditioning/coercion.
while insight into psychological processes as they operate in "flatland" culture is always useful, it is also limited by the limiting assumptions of materialistic science.
Bottom line:
Sincere prayer and meditation have the power to overcome the effects of powerful psychological conditioning, which is why even people who have undergone severe trauma can and do heal.
