Also think about this - It is commonly taught today that Jesus preached in parables because he wanted to make his message easily understood to uneducated common people.  But Jesus himself explained why He spoke in parables, and it is for the opposite reason - so that His message was NOT understood by most people.
"He was teaching them many things in parables.. and He said, 'He who has ears to hear, let him hear.' And when He was alone, those around him with the twelve [disciples] asked him about the parables. 
And he said to them, 'To you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God, but for those outside, everything is in parables so that 'they may indeed see, but not perceive, and may indeed hear, but not understand, lest they should turn and be forgiven.’"

This is the kind of hard truth that "the churches" have avoided teaching about for centuries, because any message other than "God loves and saves all people" is not good for church membership and customer satisfaction.
