I've been thinking that the "Founding Fathers" may have taken the Julian the Apostate approach to religious liberty for the same reasons as the historical Julian the Apostate: too many Christians in the country to make Christianity illegal again. Maybe back then the Masons were more idealistic about their cause and thought that free speech would work in their favor because they had it right.
