The Civil War: The Battle of Chancellorsville. A panel of historians discusses the Battle of Chancellorsville in 1863, considered to be General Robert E. Lee's greatest victory. Initially, Union General Joseph Hooker planned to envelop the Confederate Army, but chose to retreat instead, allowing General Stonewall Jackson and General Lee to counterattack. The resulting rout temporarily tipped the balance of the war in favor of the Confederacy, despite the fatal shooting of General Jackson. The New-York Historical Society hosted this event.
