The Presidency Calvin Coolidge's Legacy. The Calvin Coolidge Presidential Foundation and Library of Congress hosted a conference marking the centennial of the 30th president's ascension to the White House. After President Warren Harding's sudden death, the vice president's father -- a notary public -- administered the oath of office in the family's Vermont home early on the morning of August 3, 1923. Coolidge scholars considered the president's legacy in this concluding session.

The Presidency "Government is the Problem". President Ronald Reagan delivered his 1981 inaugural address from the U.S. Capitol West Front -- a first. He vowed to turn around the economic crisis and said, "Government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem." He went to France mid-way through his presidency, in 1984, for the D-Day 40th anniversary and spoke of "the boys of Pointe du Hoc."

The Women's International League for Peace & Freedom was founded in 1915 by more than 1000 women from around the world opposed to World War I. This film, courtesy of the Swarthmore College Peace Collection, uses interviews with several early members, photographs, and archival film to document the history of the anti-war group up until the mid-1980s.
