The Civil War: Military Communication During Civil War Battles. U.S. Naval Academy professor Wayne Hsieh described how Civil War generals were able to see aerial views of the battlefield for the first time through military balloons and how they could communicate between widely dispersed troops via the telegram. The Virginia Center for Civil War Studies at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg hosted this event.
