President Nixon Farewell to Staff. On the morning of August 9, 1974, President Richard Nixon delivered a farewell address to his cabinet and staff in the East Room of the White House. With impeachment and forcible removal from office looming because of the Watergate scandal, he had announced his resignation the evening before -- becoming the first president in U.S. history to voluntarily leave his post before the end of his term. The Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum provided this video.
