Campaign 2016: Presidential Candidates Debate
Presidential nominees Donald Trump (R) and Hillary Clinton (D) debated a variety of economic and foreign policy topics in the first presidential debate of 2016, held at Hofstra University on New York’s Long Island. Moderator Lester Holt, the NBC Nightly News anchor, began with questions on jobs and the economy and worked though other topics including tax policy and national security. Mr. Trump focused much of his criticism on Secretary Clinton’s ties to other established politicians, while she emphasized the history of his businesses in the U.S. and abroad.
This was the first of three debates the candidates were scheduled to participate in.

Acting DNI Maguire Testimony on Whistleblower Complaint
Acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire, testifying before the House Intelligence Committee, defended his handling of the whistleblower complaint involving President Trump. Mr. Maguire said he acted in accordance with the law when he did not turn over the complaint to Congress immediately. This complaint and multiple media reports that President Trump pressured the Ukrainian president to investigate 2020 Democratic presidential candidate and former Vice President Joe Biden and his son led House Democrats to formally begin an impeachment inquiry.

Supreme Court Nominee Announcement
President Trump announced Judge Amy Coney Barrett from the U.S. Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals as his pick to fill the Supreme Court vacancy created by the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The president referred to the judge as a “woman of unparalleled achievement,” later urging the “members of the other side of the aisle to provide Judge Barrett with a respectful and dignified hearing that she deserves.” In thanking the president for his confidence, Judge Barrett acknowledge that her nomination was a “momentous decision,” promising if confirmed “to discharge the responsibilities of this job to the very best of my ability.”
