FBI Oversight
Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James Comey testified at an oversight hearing of the FBI’s operations. Members focused their questions primarily on the FBI’s handling of the investigation of 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s use of private email servers while serving as secretary of state, and Mr. Comey’s ultimate decision not to recommend charges against her. He defended the quality of the investigation, the integrity of the people involved, and the commitment of bureau agents and employees in the pursuit of justice.

Senate Judiciary Meeting on Brett Kavanaugh Nomination
The Senate Judiciary Committee voted 11-10 to move the Supreme Court nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh out of committee. Senator Jeff Flake (R-AZ) only cast the deciding “aye” vote after negotiations with Democrats to delay the floor vote on this nomination for up to a week, giving the FBI time to investigate the sexual assault allegations against Judge Kavanaugh. At that time, Senate Republican leadership and the Trump Administration had not yet agreed to Senator Flake’s request. Senator Flake could vote “no” in the full Senate on moving forward with the nomination.
