Washington Journal: Obama's Wars
Bob Woodward, author of Obama’s Wars, talked about President Obama’s direction of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq during his first 18 months in the White House. Topics included the president’s deliberations over whether to send more U.S. troops to Afghanistan, the issues faced by administration officials, and the conflicts between people in several key positions. Mr. Woodward also responded to telephone calls and electronic communications.
Clips were shown of Mr. Woodward speaking October 7, 2010, on the “Charlie Rose Show,” in 1994 about the working relationship between President Clinton and Vice President Gore, and in 2007 about President George W. Bush.

Campaign 2012: Mitt Romney Foreign Policy Speech
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney gave his views on U.S. foreign policy. He focused on the Middle East, including stopping Iran from creating nuclear weapons and helping the people of Israel, Libya, and Syria. He criticized the Obama administration and said that the president had failed to lead and that “hope is not a strategy.” Topics included the size of the U.S. Navy and the war in Afghanistan. Former Governor Romney spoke to cadets in the Virginia Military Institute’s Hall of Valor. He made several references to VMI graduate George Marshall, the chief of staff of the Army who became secretary of State and of Defense.

Ceremonial Swearing-In of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh
Brett Kavanaugh was sworn in as the 114th Supreme Court justice in a ceremony at the White House. In remarks before the swearing-in, President Trump apologized to Justice Kavanaugh and his family for the “terrible pain and suffering you have been forced to endure,” referring to the Senate confirmation process. After taking the oath of office, administered by his predecessor, Anthony Kennedy, Justice Kavanaugh thanked the president for his support and affirmed his commitment to judicial independence and impartiality. “The Senate confirmation process was contentious and emotional. That process is over. My focus now is to be the best justice I can be. I take this office with gratitude and no bitterness,” said the new justice. In addition to recently retired Justice Kennedy, all nine sitting Supreme Court justices attended the East Room ceremony. President Trump nominated Brett Kavanaugh on July 9 and he was confirmed by the Senate, 50-48, on October 6.
