Johnny Cash Statue Dedication. A statue of musician and Arkansas native Johnny Cash was unveiled at a dedication ceremony in the U.S. Capitol, where it will remain on display. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) quoted one of his songs as identifying with ordinary Americans, saying, “Johnny Cash told us in his lyrics that he wore black ‘for the poor and the beaten down, livin’ in the hopeless, hungry side of town.'” This was echoed by House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), who said Mr. Cash “gave a voice to the struggles of the people, who were downtrodden and marginalized.” Members of the Cash family and Arkansas politicians also spoke. Mr. Cash was the first professional musician to be honored with a statue in the Capitol. He and civil rights leader Daisy Bates replaced statues of segregationist James Clarke and Confederate sympathizer Uriah Rose, who previously represented the state of Arkansas in the building.
