He defended his opposition to restrictions on campaign finance, joked about being disliked by both Democrats and supporters of President-elect Donald Trump, criticized foreign policy isolationism, and spoke about what the Senate and judiciary mean to him. Leader McConnell is the longest-serving Senate party leader in U.S. history. Senator John Thune (SD) was chosen to succeed Senator McConnell as the Republican leader in January 2025, but Senator McConnell will serve the remainder of his term, which ends in January 2027.
