Dr. Martha Hughes Cannon U.S. Capitol Statue Unveiling. House Speaker Mike Johnson presided over the Dr. Martha Hughes Cannon statue unveiling in the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center. She was a Utah state senator (1897-1901) -- the first woman to hold that position in the country -- as well as a physician, suffragist, and health reformer. Dr. Cannon was also a polygamist, which attracted controversy during her career. She was born in 1857, just before the Civil War, and died during the Great Depression in 1932.
