DataRepublican (small r) @DataRepublican - I'm learning fast that there are really only two kinds of politicians in Washington.
90% of them are deeply interconnected and bipartisan. They trade favors, swap staffers, and spend their time at luncheons and "conferences." Their main focus is foreign aid and military spending; coincidentally, those dollars funnel into NGOs and contractors controlled by their friends.
Around 5% are true contrarians, by conviction and by necessity. They stay clean because they stay disconnected. They have few, if any, monetary ties, and that's by design. They often appear "isolated" because they have to be. 
Maybe a few try to balance somewhere in the middle, because in DC, influence is the currency of getting anything done. But most fall clearly into one camp or the other.
This is not meant to be a "downer." If George Soros and Bill Gates can systemically hack the current structure of DC to be the way it is today, we can too.
