Now fast forward to 2019, I want to show you something I just found: email chains between the State Department and a contractor tasked with monitoring U.S.-based media coverage on Ukraine in 2019. These emails are dated March 29, 2019, and State Department was automating media monitoring with search terms that included the candidate for the 2020 election. To me, it looks like the Ukraine issue was starting to get tangled up with domestic politics.
Not only that, but they were searching for U.S.-based social media coverage of specific individuals tied to the Ukraine issue. These individuals weren’t employed by the U.S. government during the time the State Department was monitoring their coverage.
