It eventually revealed the hidden history: this change began at the Smithsonian as part of a top-down effort to reengineer language for political purposes. Their explanation?
“‘Slave’ is rather reductive, in essence insisting that the only thing about the person that matters is that they are enslaved... ‘Enslaved person’ by contrast foregrounds that these were, first and foremost, people.”
