Trad West @trad_west_ - Pope Leo XIV sent a message to the Amazonian bishops who are participating in a meeting in Bogotá, Colombia, about the importance of caring for nature without becoming its slaves or worshippers.
In a telegram to Cardinal Pedro Barreto Jimeno, president of the Ecclesial Conference of the Amazon, signed by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Pope thanked the bishops for “their efforts to promote the greater good of the Church for the faithful of the beloved Amazonian territory.”
Speaking about what was learned at the Synod of the Amazon, held in October 2019, Leo XIV exhorted them to seek, based on unity and collegiality as an “episcopal body,” concrete and effective ways to help “the diocesan bishops and apostolic vicars fulfill their mission.”
To achieve this, Pope Leo XIV proposed three dimensions: the Church’s mission of proclaiming the Gospel to all peoples, the just treatment of the peoples who live there, and the care of the common home.
“It is necessary that Jesus Christ, in whom all things are recapitulated, be proclaimed with clarity and immense charity among the inhabitants of the Amazon,” said the Pope. For the Pope, it is necessary “to give them the fresh and pure bread of the Good News and the heavenly food of the Eucharist, the only means of truly being the People of God and the Body of Christ.”
“Where the name of Christ is preached, injustice proportionally recedes, for, as the Apostle Paul says, all exploitation of man by man disappears if we are capable of receiving one another as brothers,” said Leo XIV.
Within this “perennial doctrine,” the Pope emphasized the importance of caring for the “home” that God the Father “entrusted to us as attentive stewards, so that no one may irresponsibly destroy the natural goods that speak of the goodness and beauty of the Creator.”
“Nor, much less, should one submit to them as a slave or a worshipper of nature, for things were given to us so that we might attain our goal of praising God and thus obtaining the salvation of our souls,” the Pope finally warned.
