U.S. Naval Institute @NavalInstitute - The Douglas TBD Devastator torpedo bomber was considered the U.S. Navy's most advanced aircraft when it entered service in 1937 but proved to be obsolete by 1942. During the Battle of Midway, 35 of the 41 Devastators launched by U.S. carriers were lost without scoring a hit on the Japanese fleet. Today there are no surviving examples of the Devastator other than a dozen wrecks that have been discovered underwater.
