Senator Brent Taylor@SenBrentTaylor - I stand firmly in support of the deployment of the National Guard to Memphis. This decisive action by President Donald Trump @realDonaldTrump@POTUS and @GovBillLee is a necessary and welcome step to address the persistent challenges of violent crime that have plagued our Bluff City for far too long. My efforts to #MakeMemphisMatter are paying off, and I’m glad our city is getting the help it needs so law-abiding citizens feel safe to enjoy our parks, restaurants, and businesses. Memphis must have a safe environment where families can thrive, businesses can flourish, and communities can unite without the shadow of fear.
The National Guard's presence will provide critical support to our dedicated law enforcement officers, bolstering their efforts to restore order and drive down crime rates that have reached unacceptable levels. We have seen measurable progress in recent months because of @MarshaBlackburn’s persistent efforts to get federal resources like the FBI here, but we cannot afford to rest on our laurels. The Guard's expertise in community support has proven effective in DC facing similar crises, and it will help accelerate the positive momentum from FBI efforts already underway in Memphis.
I must, however, strongly oppose the recent remarks by Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris, who has characterized this deployment as a "military occupation" and expressed unfounded fears that it threatens our democracy and freedoms. Such rhetoric is not only alarmist but divisive, sowing unnecessary doubt among our citizens at a time when unity is essential. Mayor Harris's calls to "reconsider" and his warnings of armored vehicles and semi-automatic weapons patrolling our streets paint a picture of oppression rather than partnership. This is not an invasion; it is an investment in public safety. The National Guard is composed of everyday Tennesseans, our neighbors, friends, and fellow patriots, who serve with honor to protect, not intimidate. To suggest otherwise undermines the very institutions that keep us secure and disrespects the brave men and women ready to answer the call.
Instead of rejecting this support, I urge Mayor Harris and local leaders to collaborate fully with state and federal partners. Send us the resources, yes—but let us also embrace every tool available to make Memphis safer. Our freedoms are preserved through strong communities, not by turning away help when it's needed most.
Together, with the National Guard's assistance, we will build a brighter, safer future for Memphis and all of Tennessee. In other words, we will Make Memphis Matter. Our state cannot be successful if its most famous city is sliding into chaos.

Sen. Marsha Blackburn @MarshaBlackburn - This is just awful. Thankful that @realDonaldTrump is sending Memphis the support it needs to restore law and order.

This is why President Trump is sending in the National Guard to Memphis. This gunfight happened in broad daylight Saturday near a very well-to-do area called Harbor Town. Memphis City Hall is in bed with the gangbangers.
