How the hack worked
AT&T's network used "in-band signaling," sending control signals over the same channels as voice calls. A specific 2600 Hz tone signaled an idle line. In the late 1960s, it was discovered that a toy whistle from Cap'n Crunch cereal produced this tone. By blowing the whistle into the phone, phreaks could mimic the signal, gain control of the line, and make free calls. Later, "blue boxes" were developed to reproduce this tone electronically.

This discovery significantly impacted technology history:
It exposed network security flaws and inspired early hacking culture.
Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak were fascinated by the story, sold blue boxes, and credited this experience as influential before founding Apple.
The 2600 Hz tone inspired the name of 2600: The Hacker Quarterly magazine.
Ultimately, phone companies switched to more secure "out-of-band signaling," making the whistle and blue boxes ineffective for hacking.
