Combat Learjet @Combat_learjet - Takeoff emergencies are one of the most challenging scenarios we face as pilots. There is a lot happening in a very short period of time. It is the time when the aircraft is the heaviest with fuel, slowest speed, and a time when critical information must be analyzed and acted upon in a very short period of time. I brief my First Officers before every trip what we will reject or continue a takeoff for. In essence we look at 2 speeds when making this decision. The first speed is 80 Knots, we can reject a takeoff for just about anything prior to that speed. Above 80 knots and prior to our predetermined “Decision speed/V1” we only reject the takeoff for 4 things.
1. Engine failure/Engine Fire
2. Any fire or fire indication (Cargo fire/ APU Fire etc)
3. Predictive Wind-shear Warning
4. The aircraft is unable to fly
Above our V1 speed we are continuing the takeoff, unless number 4 becomes an issue.
Number 4 is the most difficult situation to analyze and decide on. Most pilots feel more comfortable in the air (me included), thus we want to get the aircraft airborne and then work whatever emergency situations we have. These are all just basic guidelines, of course there are situations that don’t fit into the scenarios above and must be decided on at the time of the event. This has all weighed heavy on my mind today. I can’t imagine what the UPS pilots were going through with the horrific hand they were dealt, may they RIP.
