Europe is literally dying for better AC.
Right now as another brutal heat dome scorches part of the globe... record temperatures, red alerts across France and the UK, school closures, and early heat deaths already reported (yes that's real, Google it or ask Grok).
In summer 2024 alone studies estimate ~63,000 heat-related deaths across Europe.
For the entire United States across the whole year of 2024? 44,447 gun deaths.
One European summer of heat claimed more lives than a full year of gun violence in America.
The difference isn’t politics or culture wars. It’s air conditioning.
America has AC in roughly 90% of homes. Europe averages around 20%... and far lower in many northern countries according to the latest stats (UK ~5%, Germany only recently climbing toward 19%). Older buildings weren’t built for it, energy costs bite and your wind power ain't lowering shit, oh and there’s still cultural resistance to “artificial cooling.”
Singapore’s Lee Kuan Yew didn’t wait for the body count to climb. Research this man. Decades ago he called air conditioning “a most important invention for us, perhaps one of the significant inventions of history.” The technology that “changed the nature of civilization by making development possible in the tropics.”
One of his very first acts as Prime Minister was installing AC in civil service buildings. Singapore became a global powerhouse because it stayed productive and livable in equatorial heat.
The data, on every metric, backs him up completely. Again, you can Google it yourself (even though I will provide linked scholarly articles and research). Widespread efficient AC is one of the most proven ways to diminish heat mortality, especially for the elderly and vulnerable... oh shit, and why not raise work efficiency too?
