Modern units are dramatically more efficient than the old myths suggest. You aren't hurting the planet whatsoever (to all the virtue signallers). It’s not just comfort. It’s literaly public health. It’s keeping economies running when the mercury spikes and you're baking, claiming "dolce far niente"...
Europe is learning this the hard way while the thermostat keeps rising. This is a fact, climate is always changing, thank you @ChrisMartzWX for hammering that home, but global crisis it is not, except for the unprepared.
The technology exists. The evidence is overwhelming. Adaptation isn’t weakness... it's just basic logic, which the majory seem to lack... That or willpower to admit they're wrong.
As another heatwave rolls in the question is simple:
How many more summers of “learning the hard way” before Europeans learn cooling infrastructure is a lifesaving tool? Not like the hysteria you've been led to believe.
Anyway the more Europeans clog my feed with their weird virtue signalling the more I need to reiterate they are flat out wrong on multiple fronts.
1. It will not increase global temperatures in any meaningful way. Climate is always changing. It was hotter when dinosaurs walked the earth. Check the Nature Communications paper from this year on AC emissions... they show the extra warming from rising AC use is only around 0.05°C by 2050 even in the middle scenario. Tiny.
2. The ozone will be just fine. The official WMO/UNEP ozone assessment confirms recovery is happening and modern AC refrigerants have zero ozone depletion potential. Look it up.
3. Europeans actually just don't work that hard compared to North Americans and it's obvious why. OECD numbers show Americans put in way more average annual hours. In hotter parts of Europe the lack of AC makes sustained work physically and mentally tougher which is probably why the “family and friends” justification sounds a lot like “it’s just too unbearable to grind in this heat.”
