The North Carolina Fisheries Association would like to express our appreciation for President Donald J. Trump's July 2nd declaration of a National Scallops Day and NOAA's announcement to make implementing scallop permit stacking and opening the "Northern Edge" to the scallop fleet agency priorities.
When implemented, opening the "Northern Edge" will grant scallop fishermen access to productive fishing grounds that have been closed for years and permit stacking will allow flexibility for scallop permit holders to consolidate operations, cut costs, and fish more safely and efficiently.
When declaring National Scallops Day, President Trump referred to himself as "the Fishermen's Friend", a title he and his Administration will certainly have earned by acting on these and other NOAA priorities, such as:
Defending the Domestic Shrimp Fleet from Trade Imbalances;
Evaluating Baseline Restrictions;
Revising Snapper Grouper Permit Policies;
Addressing Shark Depredation, and
Rescinding Industry Funded Monitoring Requirements.
As NCFA Board Chairman, I am encouraged by the Trump Administration's commitment to Restore American Seafood Competiveness and their recognition of the importance of American seafood producers. For years, this Country has recognized that other food producing industries, such as farming and ranching, are critical to National security and it's nice to see the commercial fishing industry finally getting the same recognition."
The North Carolina Fisheries Association is optimistic that the America First Seafood priorities, set by the Trump administration to improve American Seafood Competiveness and the USDA Office of Seafood will result in meaningful actions that will not only benefit North Carolina's commercial fishermen, seafood consumers, and our coastal communities but also every American seafood lover.
