review #3 out of ???. Manifesto by Sunburst. trad prog metal, where it's prog but not TOO prog, if you know what I mean. it's prog in the same way that most of the other prog bands are prog. prog with double rubber. something to keep in mind, this is not a genre I fuck with, I'm not sure but I don't think I've ever listened to a whole album by any other band that plays this kind of metal. I'd recommend turning the volume up to 11 if you plan to give it a spin because this is not the sort of music that works well at a low volume. anyways. this album gets off to a very weak start with two bland songs (the first one also has the worst, weirdest vocal performance in the album), the sum of which take up the first 15 minutes. a lot of people would give up at some point in those 15 minutes, God knows I almost did, but I'm glad I decided against it. track #3 "Samaritan" is more commercial, radio friendly fare, but it's just a much better song than the first two. it's also the album's turning point, as it gets a lot better from this point forward. the guitars are definitely the MVPs in this band, which is precisely what God would ask of any metal band. great playing in the intros (keeping it melodic and traditional but still going hard), great riffing throughout, there's nothing negative I can say about them. those solid melodies and the gradual build up of the album's cohesiveness makes it easier and easier to like as you go through it. by the very end ("Nocturne", which amusingly features the best vocal performance) it really comes into its own and leaves an impression. 8.5/10 probably the highest I'll ever rate anything in this style
