You would think so, but on an emotional level criminal is just an undesirable social label for most people. The only reason they reject a criminals or being a criminal is because they are afraid of the label itself. Not because of any empathy for victims of criminals or fear of being a victim of them.
The case for "sociopath" is even further abstract and often perceived as a special (good) trait.
